Euro 2016 update – Portugal 1-1 Iceland

Nani’s goal had put the favourites ahead and they appeared to be on the way to a straightforward victory, but their defensive failings came back to haunt them after the break

Iceland confounded expectations with a brave 1-1 draw to frustrate Portugal’s hopes of starting Euro 2016 with three points.

Massively backed to win before kick-off, Fernando Santos’ men appeared to be in for a routine evening when Nani put the Lusitanians ahead 31 minutes in.

But some abject defending allowed Birkir Bjarnason to slide in for the winner, and Nani subsequently struck inches wide of the post as the island nation held on.
