Jay Z released a new song addressing police brutality on Thursday, following the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who were shot and killed by police earlier this week in separate incidents in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Falcon Heights, Minnesota, respectively.
The powerful song, “Spiritual,” is the rapper’s first new material since the release of his 2013 album, Magna Carta…Holy Grail.
The track was released on Tidal and was made available to everyone, with or without a subscription to the streaming service.
“I made this song a year or so ago, I never got to finish it,” the music mogul said in a statement released along with the new track. “I’m saddened and disappointed in THIS America — we should be further along. WE ARE NOT.”
“I trust God and know everything that happens is for our greatest good, but man… it’s tough right now,” the statement continues. “Blessings to all the families that have lost loved ones to police brutality.”
