England captain Wayne Rooney says he will retire from international football after the 2018 World Cup in Russia
“I’m obviously pleased, it’s always nice to captain your country and I’m looking forward to this new regime.
“I said at the Euros I enjoy playing in this team and that’s the case still. There were questions over whether I should stop playing for England but I said as soon as the Euros were over that I wanted to continue.
“It’s something I love doing and I made Sam [Allardyce] aware of that when he got the job.
“There are obviously bad memories from the last game for England [the Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland] so it will be good to be back out there playing, hopefully with a positive result.”
“Realistically, Russia will be my last opportunity to do anything with England, so I am going to try and enjoy these two years.
“Hopefully I can then end my time playing for England on a high.
“My mind is made up. Russia will be my last tournament.”
