This Is Why The IPHONE X Is Worth GHC 7000

As a technology enthusiast, I decided a couple weeks ago to get my hands on Apples new flagship phone THE IPHONE X after the social media buzz surrounding its release. Here in Germany, the buzz is so strong that people are queuing hours in freezing temperatures just to get their hands on the X after Apple announced its release somewhere in September. I was left with no choice but to wait until the dust settles.

Two weeks into its release the dust seem to never settle, people could still be seen queuing in front of Apple stores in this cold temperatures and my hopes of acquiring an IPHONE X came to a halt! Since online shopping has never been my thing, I never even considered ordering it on the internet even though I work with the electronic commerce and cloud computing company AMAZON. Other pressing issues needed to be taken care of and this resulted in me putting my pursuit of Apples new technology on hold.

I had a couple of days off starting last Monday and decided to spend it all in PARIS -France with my Family, since its just a little over 5 hours by train from Munich. On the second day of my visit, my tour around Paris’ breathtaking Val D’Europe Mall brought me to one of Apple’s shop and to my surprise, there was no queue ! Yes you heard right ! NO QUEUE!

Out of curiosity,  I immediately entered the shop and was greeted with the word “Bonjour” (which translates to Good Morning ) by a nice looking young woman. I greeted back and my first question was ” est-ce que tu a Iphone X ici ? ” ( Do you have an iPhone X here?). she replied in the affirmative. I walked straight through the various pieces of Apple products displayed to the counter which is at the opposite end of the entrance and made a request to buy the most advanced piece of mobile technology (According to Apple)- The IPHONE X. After choosing the type I want and getting the paperwork done, it was time to make payment. The 256 Gigabytes version I chose costs 1,329 Euros (GHC7,067.49) and the other one which is the 64 Gigabytes version comes with a price tag of 1,159 Euros (GHC 6,185.44) . After payment was done, I rushed home to put Apples new Phone through its Paces.

The iPhone X shares the same specs with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The X uses the Apple A11 Bionic processor as well as a new GPU designed by Apple but it brings over a variety of features that aren’t available on the other two models. The all-screen design, the incredible OLED display, Face ID, the TrueDepth camera system, Animoji, and the improved telephoto lens on the back, are only found on the iPhone X.

The iPhone X is nearly bezel-less, as advertised, with that notorious notch for the front camera assembly eating a chunk out of the screen at the top. On the back, the dual cameras create a sharp, not smooth bump that you should even out with a nice case. Apple says that the glass back is durable, but i strongly suggest getting a case for any 1,329 Euros phone, no matter how strong it is.

The home button is gone and it isn’t a big deal, navigation-wise. You flick up from the bottom of the screen to go home. Flicking up and to the right shows you your most recent apps as cards, which you can scroll through to pick the one you want to open. You adapt to this very quickly. It was early July when it became firmly certain that the iPhone X, which we all called iPhone 8 back then, will not feature any kind of fingerprint scanning technology under the display. Touch ID already played a big part of my iPhone life, and I got used to it to the point that I’d unlock the iPhone well before I’d interact with it. And I thought there’s no way facial recognition would be as fast.

Now that I’m using Face ID, the front-facing 7-megapixel camera is the iPhone X’s most radical advancement and I can tell you that I was WRONG, the Face ID on the Iphone X is fast. From the moment you unlock your phone, it keeps scanning your face for attention, it logs you into apps, it lets you pay for online content and authenticates Apple Pay payments. It all happens without you having to do anything else in most cases, though payments do require an extra button press. That’s the real beauty of it.

I tried Face ID in various lighting and it worked almost all of the time. You will still have to enter your passcode, more often than you did in the Touch ID world. For instance, if you’re passing your locked phone, and as other people start to unlock it, it’ll scan their faces—if it uses up its five valid attempts at face unlocking, you then have to enter your passcode. You can also temporarily disable Face ID

Do I still want Face ID and Touch ID on the same device? Nope! Given a choice between two identical iPhones except for their biometric features, I’d always go for Face ID, no questions asked. It’s that simple for me now that I have actually tried Face ID in real life. Thankfully, the iPhone X has other perks as well on top of Face ID, which makes buying it an even easier decision.

If you are upgrading from an iPhone version that is more than 2 years old, don’t really need a large phone in your hand and can actually afford the price tag. This is clearly the best Apple iPhone available at the moment. It is also the most innovative Apple has been in a while and so far, I have not regretted buying it. However, this is a phone you will have to care for every second of the day, and don’t want to drop due to carelessness.
