Real Madrid’s talisman, Karim Benzema, has announced his return to the French national team after about five years of suspension over his alleged involvement with a leaked sex tape.
Benzema announced his return to the team in a post sighted by Standupgh on his official Facebook page on Tuesday evening, May 18, 2021.
According to him, “So proud of this return to the French team and the confidence they give me. Thank you to my family, friends, my club…and to everyone who has always supported me and give me strength on a daily basis”.
Benzema had been under formal investigation in connection with an alleged attempt to blackmail a fellow player.
He was suspended from the national team in 2016 as announced by the then head of the French Football Federation
Mathieu Valbuena ‘deeply disappointed’ by Karim Benzema over ‘sex tape plot’,
Noël Le Graët noted that he and his federation colleagues were enormously sad to have made the decision that the Real Madrid striker was no longer able to be selected, saying he was a talented player.
Benzema was then investigated over an alleged attempt by one of his friends to extort money from a fellow international, Mathieu Valbuena, over a sex tape.
The French player of Algerian origin had told investigators he approached Valbuena about the tape on behalf of “a childhood friend” but claims he did not think he was doing anything wrong.
Benzema’s lawyer, Sylvain Cormier, had insisted he was not party to any blackmail attempt, saying, “He played no part, I repeat no part, in any blackmail or attempted blackmail.”
Prior to his suspension, the goal-scoring machine, Benzema had asked the FFF to delay making a decision which came six months before Euro 2016 took place in France.
