‘I Was A Bit Nervous’– Azamati After Missing Out On 100m Semifinals

Ghana’s 100 meters record holder, Benjamin Azamati says he couldn’t qualify for the semi-finals because he was nervous.

The 23-year-old could only manage a fourth place finish, clocking 10.13s in the hotly anticipated race.

In a post-race review of his performance, Azamati said as a first timer in the Olympics, and running against heavyweights like Yohan Blakes and Rohan Browning caused him butterflies in his stomach before he started running.

“Ever since I started running, I have never run alongside these great athletes and I think he [Yohan Blake] is one of them. There was nervousness and all of that, but I think it was a good experience, and I am going to get back stronger,” he said.

He also admitted his slow start was a reason for his poor performance.

“I worked according to my race plan, but I think I had a poor reaction and I had to come back into the race from behind, which was not easy for me. It was very difficult for me and I could not keep up my form and that was one of my mistakes,” he said.
