Barcelona have sacked Ronald Koeman as their head coach.
Renowned sports journalist, Fabrizio Romano first disclosed the news on his social media pages.
Barcelona later released a short statement on the their website confirming the sack of the renowned coach:
“Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva. FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”
Koeman was sacked following the club’s poor performances in the league and champions league.
His sacking comes just hours after Barca lost 1-0 to Rayo Vallecano in La Liga competition. After the defeat on Wednesday, Koeman said:
“It [Barcelona’s league position] says we’re not well. The team has lost balance in the squad, lost very effective players, which shows. In recent years other clubs have strengthened every season and we haven’t, which also shows.”
The club is currently 9th on the league table, 16 points off league leaders Real Madrid.
The Dutch was appointed as Barcelona manager in August 2020 following the sacking of Quique Setién.
In his first season, the former Everton and Netherland manager had moderate success, leading Barcelona to a third place in La Liga and winning the Copa del Rey.
But he has struggled in his second season following the departure of Lionel Messi, who left as a free agent in the summer to join French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez, who currently coaches Al Sadd has been widely tipped to succeed Koeman. Former Juventus and Chelsea coach Antonio Conte has also been linked with the club.
