The vice-president of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that the Ghana card will soon be used as an e-passport come 2022
This piece of revelation implies that the Ghana card, which is a unique biometric identification card will soon be used as an e-passport and accepted in 197 countries and 44,000 airports around the world
What this means is that bearers of the Ghana card be able to board any flight to Ghana by just showing their card
This is following Ghana’s official acceptance on October 13, 2021, as the 79th member of the ICAO’s Public Key Directory (PKD) community.
The ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) is a central repository for exchanging the information required to authenticate e-passports.
The vice-president made this revelation yesterday during a public lecture he gave at the Ashesi University on the digitisation of the Ghanaian economy
He said Ghanaians in the diaspora would be able to into Ghana without having a Ghanaian visa once the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) was linked to the National Identification Authority (NIA) architecture, which according to him, “will be very soon”.
The Veep also alluded to the fact that the Ghana card will also help security agencies to man our boarders more effectively and efficiently with the aid of the new technology
