Cristiano Ronaldo is not a happy man after his country, Portugal failed to secure automatic qualification to the 2022 world cup after conceding a later winner to Serbia who topped the group following that result and Ronaldo and his men will now how to secure qualification to the 2022 Qatar World Cup through the play-offs.
The game started brightly for Portugal, who went ahead in just three minutes after Renato Sanches put them ahead after a costly error by the Serbians. A mistake by Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio however gave the Serbs a glimmer of hope as they equalised
The stage was perfectly set once more for Ronaldo to steal the headlines and save his country once more as he has down many times without number. Unfortunately the 5 times balon d’or winner could not get his country that much needed goal and it was Aleksander Mitrovic, who came in from the bench for the Serbs who put a huge dent of Portugal’s World cup hopes with a late stoppage time winner.
A clearly distraught Ronaldo could not help but cry at the sound of the whistle but it was his confrontation with the Portuguese coach, Fernando Santos that caught the eye. The 36-year old could not hide his frustration and anger as he shouted and showed dissent towards Santos. Santos was the better of the two gentlemen however as he just shook the striker’s hand and left him to gather his thoughts
Portugal are not out of it just yet as they still have a chance to qualifying to the World Cup through the playoffs.
