311 Women Died From Abortion Complications In 2019 – Ghana Health Service

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed that three hundred and eleven (311) women lost their lives from complications of unsafe abortions in the year 2019. According to the health authority measures are already in place beef up the integration of Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) services in the day to day health services in the country.

The Bono Region Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kofi Amo-Kordie made these revelations at a stakeholders meeting with the Regional Coordinating Team to discussion the strengthening of the integration of the Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) services in the routine health services in the Bono Region

“Institutionalizing comprehensive abortion care services as permitted by Ghana’s law at all levels including linkages with the private sector safe abortion service providers is the way to go if we want to save lives of many women,” he said.

All was not doom and gloom on the day as he revealed that maternal mortality has been on the declined over the last two decades. “Complications from unsafe abortions have contributed substantially to Ghana’s high maternal mortality and whether we like it or not, people will accidentally get pregnant and will abort it,” he said.
