African Cup Of Nations Kicks-Off Today

The African Cup of Nations otherwise known as the AFCON kicks-off today in what will be the 33rd edition of the biggest footballing tournament in Africa and will see 24 countries from the continent test their footballing skills for the ultimate bragging rights as the best footballing nation in Africa.

The tournament which kick-offs with host nation Cameroon up against Burkina Faso and the second match of the day will feature Ethiopia against Cape Verde, will showcase some of Africa’s very best players across Europe, such as Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane, who will represent Egypt and Senegal respectively, Arsenal’s Thomas Partey, who will be representing Ghana and many others of the ilk.

COVID-19 had threatened to not make the tournament see the light of day but for the careful planning and efforts of the Confederation of African Football and all stakeholders who put resources together to make it come off.

That not withstanding we do not expect this AFCON to be like the ones that have been played without COVID as measures must be taken to protect players, technical staff and supporters, which has led to limits being put on the number of fans to be allowed to stadiums.
