Liz Truss Becomes UK’s Next Prime Minister After Defeating Rishi Sunak

Liz Truss will become the new Prime Minister of Great Britain after defeating her rival, Rishi Sunak, in the Tory leadership contest. She will take over after Boris Johnson resigned earlier this year under pressure.

Liz Truss emerged victorious after winning 57% of the votes. Despite many pundits and experts naming her as a clear favourite to carry the day, many did not expect the contest to have closely contended in such a manner. She’s expected to finish all the necessary procedures and become prime minister on Tuesday after travelling to meet the Queen at Balmoral in Scotland.

Liz Truss was the foreign secretary under Boris Johnson and would come under immediate pressure to announce a plan to tackle soaring energy costs. The cost of living in the UK has significantly increased after a never-ending increase in energy costs. The new Prime minister is expected to make an announcement on a freeze on energy bills as soon as this Thursday.

Speaking after her victory, the prime minister-elect thanked the nation and her conservative party for bestowing confidence in her to lead the country at a time of difficulty. She stated that she would take bold measures to resolve the current economic crisis, which has been occasioned by an ever-increasing cost of energy.

“I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential,” Liz Truss wrote on Twitter.
