Kumasi Asante Kotoko Eliminated From CAF Champions League After Penalty Shootout Disaster

Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League by Burkina Faso club RC Kadiogo after a thrilling encounter on Sunday.

Kotoko’s fate in the prestigious tournament was squashed after a penalty shootout defeat to Burkinabe side RC Kadiogo. A brilliant freekick from Kadiogo’s Bassika Syla set the game rolling in the early stages. This obviously stunned Kotoko, who were playing at home at the Kumasi Baba Yara stadium. The league champions could not provide an answer as they strived for an equaliser with no success. The game ended 1-0 as the Burkinabe side levelled the two-leg tie, bringing the aggregate score line to 1-1 and thereby forcing the game to a penalties shootout.

Kotoko were abysmal at the shootout as they missed three times from the penalty spot on the day. Yussuf Mubarik scored his first, but Solomon Sarfo Taylor, Osei Bonsu, and Enoch Morrison missed their respective kicks to end Asante Kotoko’s campaign in the CAF Champions League. This meant that the Burkinabe club had progressed and are expected to face Congolese giants AS Vita in the second round of the CAF Champions League. Sunday’s game means that Kotoko have now lost in all penalty shootouts at the continental level.

Many have described the sequence as Kotoko’s penalty curse in the competition.
