A leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Nana Obiri Boahen, who also happens to be a prominent figure in Ghana’s Parliament, has defended the use of luxurious 4x4s by government officials.
The Member of Parliament explained that the only reason politicians and leaders of the African continent chose luxurious 4x4s over buses is because of the terrible nature of our roads. According to Obiri Boahen, this would not be the case if the continent had good motorable Roads found in Europe. Mr Nana Obiri Boahen was speaking on Accra-based OKAY FM on matters which had arrived during the burial and funeral rites of the late Queen of England.
The member of Parliament was responding to the fact that many of the leaders from developing countries had to use buses to attend the burial of Queen Elizabeth II. He added that it was not the intention of African leaders to overburden their citizens with expensive tours, but it was the situation which had necessitated such a lifestyle.
“When they are bused there is nothing wrong. Let me tell you, the Prime Minister of Sweden uses a bicycle, and Denmark’s Prime Minister uses a train. I believe that if the facilities were available here, a number of people in high office would have done the same. For instance, if we had trains that shuttle between Koforidua and Accra, MPs from that region would have stayed in their home regions and come to work.
“But because our roads are not good the time factor. So, if someone lives at Amasaman and works at Parliament house you see the time involved? So sometimes we must be fair to our leaders. What we have to do is to work at ensuring that we have accessible roads and we can emulate some of these things,” he added.
